Jan. 21, 2025
Central Calaveras Fire Protection Chief Bill Wennhold responded to the crash that claimed his son, TJ.

Firefighters from Central Calaveras Fire Protection discovered the victim in a crash was one of their own.

Firefighter TJ Wennhold, 19, died from his injuries at the scene. His father, Fire Chief Bill Wennhold, was among those who responded to the incident last week.

Wennhold had been with the fire department since serving as a cadet when he was 15 and was on his way to his scheduled shift when his pickup truck went off the road, down an embankment and landed on its roof in a creek, Fox 40 reported.

“This incident has deeply wounded us, and we appreciate the outpouring of support we are receiving from our community and beyond,” the fire district said.
